Wine Pairings for Salmon
When it comes to pairing wine with salmon, it really depends on which sauce you’ve chosen to go with your salmon, and whether your salmon is pan fried or baked. Here are our top tips.
White wine
For a rich sauce, pair with oaked Chardonnay as its vanilla notes and body will be a great compliment. The crisp acidity and citrus notes of Sauvignon Blanc are refreshing with lighter, herb-infused salmon dishes. With a hint of sweetness and acidity, Riesling is a great way to balance smoked salmon. It won’t break the bank either: Riesling is a very affordable white wine option.
Red wine
Pinot Noir is a classic choice, its earthy notes and red fruit flavours don’t overpower the fish, especially with grilled or roasted preparations. The key with pairing red wine and salmon is to ensure you select a wine with low tannins. If your dish has a richer sauce, you can pair with a fuller-bodied red such as a Merlot.
Rosé
If you’re more partial to a rosé, never fear. A dry rosé with good acidity and fruitiness works well with many salmon preparations. However, ensure that the fruitiness doesn’t overpower the salmon, especially with baked dishes.
Sparkling wine or Champagne
Champagne, Prosecco and Cava are a classic pairing for with smoked salmon or caviar. The bubbles dance on the tongue and refresh between bites. A sparkling rosé will add a touch of fruitiness.
