Can you freeze MOWI salmon?

Our salmon is so fresh we don’t freeze it before it goes into store. However, the good news is that you can freeze MOWI salmon (including cold smoked slices!) at home, but on defrosting, it can alter the texture slightly. If you intend to freeze it, we advise doing so before the best before date expires and preferably consume it within 3 months of freezing.

What’s the difference between Scottish and Norwegian Salmon?

These two countries normally raise Atlantic salmon but – the most noticeable difference to anyone picking up a fillet or two for dinner is the quality. As our salmon is raised in Scotland, there’s no need for it to be frozen (which can seriously impact the taste and texture).Both Scottish and Norwegian salmon call the Atlantic ocean home, but are raised in different waters and on different feed. One great thing about Scottish salmon is that they enjoy more room to swim, with our sea farms being 98.5% water to 1.5% fish.

Where is MOWI's salmon farmed?

All our salmon is farmed in the cold, crystal clear (but often stormy) waters of Scotland’s west coast. From Campbelltown to the Outer Hebrides, we work with local communities in areas off shore and in large sea lochs.

Is MOWI salmon fresh or frozen?

It’s always fresh, never frozen. Freezing salmon compromises the consistency of the flesh in that it can result in a mushy and cotton-wool like texture. That’s not something that we or our customers want, so each piece of salmon with our name on it is as fresh as possible.

How do you properly bake salmon?

Oven baking one of our salmon fillets is easy. Preheat your oven to 180° (fan), meanwhile pop your salmon on a baking tray, drizzle on a bit of olive oil and a bit of salt and pepper. Then simply leave it in the oven for 22 minutes (…don’t be fooled by how straightforward this is, we’ve trimmed each fillet to be as neat as possible so that you get perfect results every time).

How to pan fry salmon?

To pan fry our perfectly cut salmon fillets, start with a little bit of olive oil (just enough to stop the fish from sticking) in your pan on a high heat. In the meantime season your salmon with a little salt and pepper. Once it’s up to temperature drop it down to a medium heat and put your salmon in, skin side down. Give the fillet a gentle nudge around the pan to stop it from sticking. If you’ve got the heat right you’ll only need to cook your fish for 12 minutes, turning occasionally, until the fish has gone from translucent to a pale pink colour.

What is the healthiest way to cook salmon?

The good news is that simply by opting for salmon in the first place, you’ve already made a healthy choice. Cooking ‘en papillotte’ is great for extra health points. Essentially, it means oven cooking your salmon in a parcel of foil – why not try our En papillote salmon with asparagus and baby potatoes recipe.

Are there bones in salmon?

Yes, although we go to every effort to completely debone our salmon. That said, this process isn’t always perfect so you might find a bone or two from time to time.

How do you get rid of the smell of fish after cooking?

There are many effective ways to get rid of the smell of fish after cooking. Try using an extractor fan (with windows and doors open too if possible). You could try lighting a scented candle although this really only masks the smell. Another approach is to simmer an odour killer like vinegar, lemon or cloves and spices on your stove. Why is salmon good for you?

The main reason salmon is so good for you is that it’s high in both protein and omega-3. Protein is essentially the ‘building blocks’ of your body – the stuff you need to keep your muscles maintained. Omega three is an essential fatty acid that helps keep your heart healthy and even your cognitive functions in check. It is also high in Vitamin D which is great for strengthening bones.

What is omega-3?

Omega-3 is a ‘good’ fat that’s present in Salmon. It’s a ‘fatty acid’ – one that’s essential for our bodies. However, we can’t produce it on our own so we need to get it via the food we eat. It’s a massive help in terms of heart health, according to the NHS and cognitive function. It’s even thought to help lower the chances of certain cancers.

What does responsible farming mean?

Responsible (or sustainable) farming means producing food that doesn’t deplete our precious natural resources or cause irreversible damage. The water and environment that we farm in (and any other, for that matter) deserves to be respected and we’re committed to upholding that in everything we do. In fact, we’ve even won an award for being the most sustainable protein producer for two years in a row.
